How does the UK political system work?

In the UK, the Prime Minister leads the government with the support of the Cabinet and ministers. Parliament is made up of three sections: the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Queen. The main business of Parliament takes place in the two Houses. Generally the decisions made in one House have to be approved by the other.

Each member in the House of Commons represents a geographical constituency. Typically a constituency would have around 60,000-80,000 voters, depending mainly on whether it is an urban or rural constituency.

What is meant by "Living in a Democratic Society"?

democracy is government made up of elected representatives (Members of Parliament or MPs). It is a form of societywhich favours equal rights, freedom of speech and a fair trial and tolerates the views of minorities.

What is a political party?

A political party is where a group of people with similar ideas join together to try to win the most votes to become the biggest party in the House of Commons. If they do that, they can make a Government and can run the country.

The Conservative Party are currently the government. Their symbol is a tree. The leader is my David Cameron.

The Labour Party is the main opposition party (the party with the second biggest amount of seats) and their leader Jeremy Corbyn. Their symbol is a red rose.

The Liberal Democrat party is led by Tim Farron. Their symbol is a yellow bird.

The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) is led by Nigel Farage. Their logo is a £ pound symbol because they don't want to have the Euro and be in Europe.

The Green Party is Natalie Bennett. Their symbol is of a Green Planet Earth as they care about the environment.
